Burning mouth syndrome is also known as glossodynia. In this condition, a peculiar burning sensation is felt in the tongue. You feel like your tongue has been injured by hot foods or liquids. A scalded tongue lasts for one or two days but burning tongue syndrome persists for several days or even months. This painful sensation is not just confined to the tongue but other parts of the interior of the mouth also get affected. Other symptoms that accompany burning tongue make the condition worse. They include: loss of taste in mouth, numb or tingling feeling at the tip of the tongue, dryness in the mouth, increase in thirst, etc.

Causes of Burning Mouth Syndrome

Many a time, people suffer from this syndrome for no definite reasons. In such cases, it is believed that damage in the nerves of the interior of the mouth that provide sensation to the tongue trigger this problem. In other cases, one or more of the following factors can be responsible for burning mouth syndrome:
  • Deficiency of vitamin B12
  • Hormonal changes
  • Yeast infection in mouth
  • Poor oral habits such as teeth grinding
  • Acid reflux disease
  • Side effects of medicines
At-Home Treatments for Burning Mouth Syndrome

When burning mouth is a symptom of an underlying medical condition, it does not require any specific treatment. The treatment is aimed at curing the root cause of the problem. Treating burning mouth syndrome that occurs without any particular cause is quite difficult. In such cases, the aim of the treatment is to manage the symptoms. Here are a few home remedies for burning mouth syndrome:

Ice: This is the most popular remedy for curing a burning tongue. Take a small ice cube in your mouth and suck it slowly. The cool sensation will numb your tongue and you will not feel the burning sensation anymore. Moreover, the melting water of the ice alleviates the thirsty feeling.

Aloe Vera Gel: Topical application of fresh aloe vera gel can cure the problem. Cut open a fresh aloe vera leaf and apply the gel that oozes out of it on the tingling tongue. For faster results, you will need to apply the gel several times in a day. Every time you put on the gel you get a nice, soothing feel on the tongue.

Lavender Oil: The antiseptic qualities of lavender oil have a healing effect on the burning mouth. It promotes blood circulation and thus ensures speedy recovery from the problem. Take a few drops of lavender oil on a cotton ball and apply it on the tongue and mouth. Do this every night before going to bed and you can see marked improvement in the condition very soon.

Cold Milk and Honey: Take a glass of icy cold milk and mix one tablespoon of honey in it. Drink this milk in small sips. It has a calming effect on your body that makes you feel better. This combination also relieves the burning feeling of the tongue by improving blood circulation to the tongue. Moreover, milk is a great source of vitamin B12 that can restore normal functioning of nerve cells that provide sensation.

Plenty of Water: Burning tongue gives you a constant thirsty feeling and you feel the need to have some water all the time. When you drink water, the feeling of thirst subsides and the intensity of burning mouth symptoms decreases. Start your day by drinking at least 1-2 glasses of water. Take 8-10 glasses of water throughout the day to control dryness in the mouth.

The above home remedies are going to work for you provided you are not consuming any such foods and drinks that can aggravate the problem further. Hot spicy foods, mint and cinnamon, foods and liquids with acidic components, tea, coffee and alcohol are some of those foods that should be strictly avoided. Eat plain food without spices like boiled vegetables and fresh juice of fruits and vegetables to reduce the pain.
