Bruising is something we experience almost daily. It refers to a rupture of blood vessels beneath the skin, which happen as a result of a blow to the underlying soft tissue or bone. Most of the time, our body repairs the bruises on its own, and they usually go away in a week or two. However, taking care of the bruise will help avoid further problems.
Causes of Bruising
Bruises are caused as a result of blunt force to the surface of the skin, which leads to bleeding under the skin surface. Most of the time, a blow is what causes bruising, but bruising for no reason can happen as an outcome of a few medical conditions. The possible answer to this unexplained bruising may be a bump which you might have forgotten, or may be you do not realize but your skin has become thinner. In few cases, some medications may lead to bruises. These are anti-inflammatory medications, aspirin, and blood thinners. If you have been prescribed either of these medicines, it is better not to take them for a few days if you have to undergo a surgery since it may cause excessive bruising.
How to Heal a Bruise
Tip #1 - Ice
Immediately after you get a bruise, apply an ice pack to the affected part. Leave it there for around 30 minutes. Applying ice as early as possible after you get a bruise will lessen the pain, swelling, and overall severity of the bruise. Keep on exposing the bruised part to ice at regular intervals for a day at least, after you have got the bruise.
Tip #2 - Calendula
Calendula cream can work wonders for healing your bruise. Simply apply a tincture or cream to the bruise. Be it a major bruise or if you have unexplained bruises, which you have forgotten about, calendula works well.
Tip #3 - Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is another thing you can use to get rid of a bruise. Aloe vera gel, which is found inside aloe vera plant is especially good for minor bruises and injuries. Just apply aloe vera gel on the bruised part and let it be for sometime. Your bruise will be almost gone in sometime.
Tip #4 - Thyme
Boil thyme for 10 minutes or so in a pot. Let it cool, followed by draining the water into a separate pot. Throwing the leaves away, add the boiled thyme water in the bathtub. Finally, soak the bruises in the mixture for around 30 minutes.
Tip #5 - Apple Cider Vinegar
Make compress out of a wash cloth dabbed with cider vinegar. Press the compress tightly on the bruised area for a minimum 10 minutes at one go.
Tip #6 - Cabbage
First, soak the leaves of cabbage head in water. Then, simply apply it on the bruised area. This is a fantastic natural remedy to get rid of bruises. Let the cabbage leaf be on the bruised area for a minimum 15 minutes. Ensure that it is not too hot before you expose it to the bruised area.
Tip #7 - Arnica Gel
Arnica gel, a homeopathic medicine, helps alleviate dark and swollen bruises. The gel will also provide you relief from stiffness and discoloration. Apply this gel every 3 hours.
These are the most common remedies. In case there is considerable pain, you can pop up an acetaminophen pill, but consult a doctor before you do that.
