Pain in throat can be caused due to strep throat, sore throat, or as a symptom of common cold or flu (influenza). Strep throat is a bacterial infection caused by the bacteria Streptococcus. Sore throat and strep throat are not to be confused, as sore throat is a reaction caused after a viral infection like in common cold, whereas, strep throat is caused due to bacterial infection. On the other hand, throat pain can also be caused due to singing or shouting loudly for a longer period, as a reaction of certain allergy, etc. It can be treated with the help of over-the-counter medications as well as home remedies.
Home Remedies for Throat Pain
There are many medications that are available over-the-counter and help in strep and sore throat treatment. You can go for painkiller medications and medicated lozenges to ease the pain. You can also go for sprays that help in giving quick relief (it should be noted that throat sprays are meant only for adults and are not to be used in case of children and infants). Apart from these, there are several effective home remedies that can be used.
Having hot or warm drinks is one of the best remedies to ease the pain and inflammation caused due to sore throat. You can have any hot drinks like ginger tea, herbal tea, chicken soup, etc. once or twice a day.
Gargle with Salt Water
One of the most ancient and yet effective throat pain remedies is to gargle with salt water 3-4 times a day. You can add ½ teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and gargle.
Lemon and Honey
Lemon and honey contain natural anti-bacterial properties, and hence, a mixture of the two can help treat throat pain. You can mix 2 teaspoons of honey in warm water and 1-2 drops of lemon juice and have the mixture 1-2 times a day.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar also contains properties that help in treating infections. A mixture of lemon, honey, apple cider vinegar, and cayenne pepper can be effective.
Garlic is also a natural antibiotic and antiseptic that helps in treating infections. You can include garlic in your dishes or soak 2-3 cloves of garlic in honey and eat it after some time.
Ginger tea has been used as a throat pain remedy, especially in Asian countries, since ancient times. While preparing tea, you can add 2-3 slices of ginger and boil the tea and have it once or twice a day.
Licorice is yet another option that help in giving quick relief. It is also one of the ingredients of several herbal teas.
Basil is a herb having natural healing properties. You can boil some leaves of holy basil and have the warm water or gargle with the water.
