Have you ever experienced the situation of getting up in the morning and finding those bags under your eyes? Or you may be getting ready for a function and see puffiness under your eyes. In both cases, you fret and think you are in a helpless situation. However, this is not true. Under eye puffiness can be effectively treated and can also be prevented.

Puffiness Under Eyes
Bags or puffiness under the eyes is a kind of mild swelling that can be caused due to a variety of reasons. As the skin around the eyes is very sensitive, any minor cause can result in swelling. However, it should be noted that this is neither a permanent disorder nor a symptom of any underlying serious problem. It is a common condition. Interestingly, it is also considered as the most annoying beauty problem faced by women (hair and skin problems come second and third respectively).

Causes
Most of the causes are not directly related to eyes. Dehydration is the most important cause of swelling under eyes. Loss of water and fluids in the body due to excess perspiration can give rise to puffy eyelids. Secondly, it can also be caused as an allergic reaction to certain foodstuffs or beauty and make-up products. Aging, heredity, and sleep deprivation are also other prominent causes. On the other hand, puffy eyes in the morning can be caused due to excess crying, alcoholism, sleeping flat on the back, consuming excess salt, etc.

Treatment
As mentioned above, this is not a serious medical concern, and hence, does not require any treatment. In case the puffiness is regular or is caused due to heredity, it can be treated through laser treatment. On the other hand, cosmetic surgical procedures like blepharoplasty are used to reshape and permanently cure bags under eyes. Allergies can be treated with antihistamines. Taking diuretics also helps in reducing eye puffiness.

Home Remedies
  • Keep a cold compress over your eyes for some time. You can even wet a towel in cool water and keep in on your eyes.
  • Eye gels can also be used to treat under-eye puffiness.
  • Use an concealer if you wish to treat the swelling immediately.
  • Soak tea bags in water and keep them on your eyes for a few minutes.
  • Sometimes, merely splashing cold water over face can also help.
One should identify and avoid products that cause allergies. Similarly, the head of the bed should be elevated or one should make use of a pillow while sleeping. Lastly, one should also reduce the intake of salty foodstuff and get adequate sleep every night to prevent eye puffiness.
