Doesn’t it feel annoying to have an itchy feeling in the roof of your mouth? Fortunately, there are some home remedies that you can try to get rid of this problem. A few of them have been lined up in this article for your reference.
There are a lot of things that can make the roof the mouth (also known as palate) itch. It can itch because you have consumed some kind of granular foodstuff, as in the case of rice crispy, cereals, etc. Your palate can also itch if you have consumed something you are allergic to. Some vegetables – like colocasia – have calcium oxalate crystals that cause no health hazard but can make your palate and throat itch. Finally, lack of personal hygiene could also be a good reason. In any case, an itchy roof palate is quite irritating.
Here are 5 easy tips to relieve yourself of an itchy palate.
Find the Cause and Avoid It
Hint: What did you put in your mouth last?
Sometimes, people are allergic to certain foodstuff. The manifestation of an allergy can range from a simple itching or burning sensation in the mouth to inflammation, an upset bowel, vomiting, diarrhea, and many other symptoms. So an itchy palate could well mean that you are allergic to something. Try and remember what it was that you last ate before your mouth began to itch. Consult a doctor about possible allergy to the food.
Avoid Hard Foodstuffs
Hint: Chips, fries, cookies, biscuits, nuts, etc.
All the above foodstuff are going to rub against the roof of your mouth, and make it itch and burn even more! So till the itching settles down, avoid these foodstuff items. It is not a very difficult thing to do. If the itching of your mouth is not because of an allergy, chances are it will settle in a while. So avoid popping the above foodstuff in your mouth till then.
Drink / Gargle with Warm Water
Hint: Warm, and NOT hot
Drinking water when we are facing any kind of a crisis – from sweaty palms during an interview, to a sick horror movie – is probably one of our instincts. The benefits of drinking water are many, one of them being to flush out any impurities in the body. Gargles with warm water may help the itching sensation of your mouth settle. However, make sure the water isn’t too hot, or the itching will be replaced by burning! Lukewarm should do the trick.
How About Some Honey?
Hint: A dollop in warm milk tastes yum
Honey is sweet, honey has many health benefits, and honey tastes yum! What more reasons could you want to try out this option to relieve an itchy roof of mouth? A dollop of honey with warm milk might just cure the itching sensation in your mouth. If you do not want to have it with milk, you can even have a spoonful of honey just like that. It will act as a lubricant and relieve you of the itching.
Maybe Some Ice Cream?
Hint: Avoid nutty ones
Now, a lot of people are also allergic to honey. If you are one of them, the above option is ruled out for you! But ice cream can come to your rescue; again, only if no other health reason stops you from having it. The cold and sweet ice cream can relieve you of an itchy palate instantly. It worked for me once, so I can personally vouch for this. However, make sure the ice cream flavor you choose, does not have any nuts or fruits in it. Being hard, these may end up aggravating the itching, rather than curing it.
If your palate continues to itch in spite of having tried all the above tips, or if you experience some pain in the roof of mouth, chances are it is an infection, an allergy, or the probable side-effect of some medication. An itchy roof of mouth could also be the beginning of dental problems. Consult your doctor without further ado. If not, I am sure these tips are going to work. Let me know!
