Phlegm in throat all the time is one of the main causes of various respiratory complications in the human body. So let’s have a look at the causes and remedies for phlegm in throat.
In order to have a healthy breathing pattern, it is very important that the lungs remain healthy and function well. Lungs play an important part in the production of phlegm, as phlegm protects lungs from foreign particles and the various infections caused by these particles. The mucous membrane of the bronchial passage of the lungs produces phlegm. The main job of phlegm is to obstruct unhealthy foreign particles such as pollen and dust particles from entering the lungs and helps prevent infection. When it changes its color to green or yellow it means some unhealthy particles have entered inside the body. Phlegm in throat all the time can indicate that the person is suffering from an underlying condition and it can lead to various health complications if not taken immediate care.
Having excessive phlegm in back of throat can be irritating as it leads to hours of harsh, constant throat clearing and coughing. For some people this is a temporary problem and it lasts as long as the infection stays in the body. However, for some this becomes a prolonged illness for which there is no relief until proper medications and care is taken.
Excess Phlegm
As I have mentioned above, phlegm or mucus in throat is a thick fluid produced by the mucous membranes of the lungs. Presence of constant phlegm can be a sign of several health threatening conditions. Infection and allergies are the two main causes of chronic phlegm in throat. Certain throat conditions such as tonsils, strep throat etc. can lead to excess phlegm. Deviated septum, another throat disorder in which the cartilage divides the nose in two sides is a potential cause of phlegm in throat. Consumption of cold foods when the body is suffering from cold and cough causes thickening of phlegm.
Pregnancy or consumption of various birth control pills are considered potential causes of nausea and nasal drip which indirectly results in phlegm stuck in throat. Some studies proclaim that excessive smoking is also a leading cause of phlegm. The toxic fumes of the dead stick causes inflammation in the mucus lining and indirectly results in thickening of mucus.
